Preparation of the fabric for printing

Like dyeing, the fabrics used for printing need some form of treatments to make them suitable for printing. This treatment, which removes natural or added impurities, is still called preparation or pretreatment.
Gray cloth as woven on a loom is quite unattractive and contains natural and added components, which impart undesirable properties to the cloth and which hinder the successful carrying out of the subsequent dyeing, printing and finishing processes. The warp and weft yarns are made up of a large number of short fibres by a process of spinning and hence tiny fibre ends protrude from their surface and the cloth woven from such yarns has a surface from which the fibre ends protrude. These fibre ends interfere with printing of the fabric by taking up parts of fine details of a design.
In order to prepare the grey fabric for printing, the protruding fibre ends have to be removed and then the fabric made absorbent as well as white. This is achieved in various steps liking singeing, desizing, scouring and bleaching.
